“We were preparing to see the New Year in with exceptional festiveness, and were awaiting midnight with some impatience. The fact is, we had in reserve two bottles of champagne, the real thing, with the label of Veuve Clicquot.”
—Anton Chekhov, “Champagne”
Like a pressed flower, a ticket stub, or a seashell, this porcelain cup is a perfect memento of a memorable date, anniversary, or quiet moment when a bottle of Veuve Clicquot marked the occasion. Decorated with the iconic label of the estimable Champagne producer, it can be used as a pencil cup, a small vase, a desk organizer, or in any number of ways. However it is used, it will serve as a thoughtful reminder of a special event…or a promise of a celebration to come.
The distinctive, original yellow label (yes, it is known as the yellow label) was registered as a trademark in 1877, when yellow was an extremely unusual color for a Champagne label. It has become perhaps the most recognizable of all wine labels. The Rosé champagne, based on the traditional Yellow Label blend and completed with Pinot Noir red wine, has a lovely pink label with the classic yellow highlighted in the center.
The veuve (widow) Clicquot, Barbe Nicole Clicquot (née Ponsardin) was born in 1777, the daughter of a textile manufacturer in Reims, Champagne. Widowed at the age of only 27, she took control of her own destiny and became one of the first modern entrepreneurs. In an era when women were excluded from the business world, she dared to assume the head of the company her father-in-law had founded in 1772, a role she undertook with passion and determination.
Her creativity and lust for innovation led to many firsts in Champagne: the first known vintage champagne; the invention of the riddling table (a process still used today to ensure crystal-clear wine); and the first known blended rosé champagne. These three inventions revolutionized champagne making and were widely adopted by producers, becoming the basis of modern champagne production.
(Fun fact: In 1811, a comet cut through the skies over Champagne, and the exceptional harvest that year led to an outstanding, now legendary, vintage: the Comet Cuvée. From then on, to memorialize that good luck, the veuve branded every cork with a tiny comet.)
Available in two colors: Classic Brut (yellow) and Rosé (pink).
Dimensions: 3.5" tall, 3" diameter. Porcelain with hand-painted gold edge. Not dishwasher-safe. Designed and detailed in the US.
