James Thurber Reading Dog Pin

What a pedigree: not only is this pup featured on the cover of James Thurber’s book of New Yorker cartoons, he or she also appeared on posters advertising a major exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art (A Mile and a Half of Lines: The Art of James Thurber). The irresistible image now adorns this sterling silver pin that is also fitted with a loop through which a chain can be threaded—so the pin can be worn both as a brooch and as a necklace (chain not included).

James Thurber—one of the foremost American humorists of the 20th century—was a writer and a cartoonist, most notably for The New Yorker.  E. B. White and Thurber shared an office there, where they collaborated on their first book, Is Sex Necessary?, which featured a number of Thurber’s cartoons. Thurber dedicated the book to two of his favorite terriers. Thurber said that dogs represent balance, serenity, and are “a sound creature in a crazy world.”

Sterling silver; one inch in diameter. Thurber’s signature is engraved on the back.
